Who We Are

Located in San Francisco’s historically underserved Bayview neighborhood, Bayview-Hunters Point Foundation for Community Improvement (BVHPFCI) exists to build a community that is empowered, clean, safe, and healthy by providing health, social, and human services and by being a responsive and responsible voice for the community. The values of the organization include a commitment to promoting an atmosphere of respect and positive interactions.

The mission of Bayview Hunters Point Foundation is to build a community that is empowered, clean, safe and healthy. Our purpose is to provide healing, promote empowerment, and foster justice. We envision the Bayview as a thriving, multicultural community – where all residents may live with dignity, integrity and fulfillment.

BVHPF HISTORICAL TIMELINE (OUR HISTORY)

1971

Bayview Hunters Point Foundation for Community Improvement founded by Ernest Mitchell, Jr. with initial Community Defender program, providing free legal services to Black Bayview residents.

1972

BVHPF began operating an outpatient methadone maintenance and counseling program, which continues to this day as the only OMM program in the Bayview.

1976

BVHPF begins providing counseling and prevention services for youth in the Bayview.

1979 

BVHPF begins providing outpatient adult and youth mental health services.

1980s and 1990s

BVHPF provides HIV/AIDS services and expands mental health services and school counseling services in the Bayview and other San Francisco neighborhoods.

2010s

BVHPF begins providing case management services to formerly homeless residents in long-term residential facilities in the Bayview and Tenderloin.


BVHPF assumes sponsorship of the former Jelani House, Inc. organization, managing properties that house the Homeless Prenatal Program’s Jelani House and BVHPF’s Jelani Residential Step Down.

 

BVHPF opens Jelani Residential Step Down transitional housing and treatment for families recovering from substance abuse.

2019-2022

BVHPF operates and/or provides support services at several San Francisco shelter-in-place (SIP) hotels during the COVID epidemic.

2021-2022

BVHPF opens Bayview SAFE, the largest navigation center for homeless individuals in San Francisco. BVHPF also begins providing housing and case management services to assist formerly homeless individuals and families to secure and maintain permanent supporting housing.



BVHPF purchases the 20,000 sf building in the Bayview which serves as organization headquarters and counseling center.

2023-2024 

BVHPF begins providing counseling and treatment services to individuals incarcerated in the San Francisco jails. BVHPF also begins addressing food insecurity in the Bayview with a large food pantry program.

BVHPF begins operating Holloway House transitional housing, and also begins providing Enhanced Case Management services through contracts with Anthem, Kaiser and the San Francisco Health Plan.

 

Following 50 years of dedicated service to our most disadvantaged and vulnerable communities, BVHPF now provides comprehensive, integrated support to over 1,500 individuals and families in San Francisco. With over 170 employees and an annual budget of over $20 million, BVHPF is now one of the largest BIPOC organizations in the Bay Area.
